The Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition and Miami-Dade County Parks Department will sponsor the annual high school golf invitational tournament on Oct. 14 at Palmetto Golf Course located at S. Dixie Highway (US 1) and Coral Reef Drive (SW 152nd Street) beginning at 8 a.m.

All Miami-Dade County private, public and parochial high schools may enter teams. Teams will consist of five players and the four lowest scores will be counted. Entries are limited to five players per school, but individuals will be accepted.

Boys’ teams and mixed teams will play 18 holes. Girls’ team may play 9 or 18 holes. This will be determined by their coaches, prior to play.

Entries will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis because there is a limit on slots.

Entry deadline is Oct. 12. Entry forms have been mailed to all high schools, but extra forms are available by calling The Fair Exhibits Office at 305-223-7060, ext. 125 or 147. Mail completed entries to Alan Weitzel, Palmetto Golf Course, 9300 SW 152 St., Miami, FL 33157.

In addition to this, there will be a high school and middle school cross country invitationals on Oct. 15 at the Tamiami Park Cross Country Course located at Coral Way (SW 24th Street) and SW 112th Avenue.

Middle school teams will start at 10 a.m. High school participants will begin at 2 p.m.

"More than 1,200 students are expected to participate," said Larry Wooten, superintendent of the cross country events. "This is like the county championships. It’s the only time all the public and private schools get to run against each other," Wooten said.

Deadline to register for the event is Oct. 7.

For high schools, entries are limited to seven students per team, with a maximum of 14 students for schools wishing to enter both boys’ and girls’ teams. All entrants must be selected by the school coach and event is limited to Miami-Dade schools only (public, private and parochial). All races are three miles. The junior varsity race will be open to any runners with no team scoring.

Middle schools — grades 6-8 — may enter only one team with no more than seven members. Runners go two miles.

Mail completed entries to Larry Wooten, Hammocks Middle School, 9889 Hammocks Blvd., Miami, Fl 33196.
